Making salt dough? Here is the recipe!

Use salt (play) dough to keep the children sweet. You can use salt dough for any theme or season. Easter eggs and flowers in the spring, trees, plants, and animals in the summer, leaves in the autumn or Christmas decorations in the winter. In this article we will explain how to make salt dough.

Do you want to make salt dough? Here is the recipe:

  • 1,5 cups of flour
  • 0,5 cup of water
  • 1 cup of salt (eventually already dissolved in the water)
  • 2 tablespoons of (salad) oil
  • Put all of the ingredients into a bowl and knead them firmly together.
  • If the dough is too dry then add water, if the dough is too wet then add flour.

TIP: roll the dough into small balls and knead in a dash of poster paint, then you don’t need to paint the dough.

Making figures and shapes:

  • Use cookie cutters to cut out the forms and figures you are using for your theme
  • Use a rolling pin to roll out the salt dough (it shouldn’t be too thick)
  • Do not make your figures too thick as they will take too long to dry and may swell up.
  • Let the children use their imagination.

Drying in the oven:

  • This is a slow process otherwise the dough will swell.
  • Pre-heat the oven to 125 to 150 degrees
  • Leave the figures for 1 to 2 hours in the oven
  • You can turn the figures over but you do not have to.
  • Do NOT use baking paper, the oil contained in the baking paper will seep into the bottom of the figures
  • It is best to put the figures onto a sheet of aluminium foil
  • To check if the figures are ready, tap them together, if they are ready they should give a ‘hollow’ sound

Here are a few examples of our Easter theme figures and forms. Please feel free to share this article 🙂
